Howling Moon es un mod que de entrada añade una nueva planta a la generación de mundos de Minecraft, la "Wolfsbane". Con esta planta podremos realizar los crafteos básicos del mod, cómo por ejemplo una guía (Lycanthropy Guide) sobre el contenido del mod (en inglés) y algunas pociones relacionadas con nuestro estado de hombre lobo.
Para convertirnos en hombre lobo, primero deberemos ser infectados (mordidos) por una nueva clase de lobo que añade el mod, el "Alphawolf". Una vez infectados, cada vez que haya luna llena en Minecraft nos transformaremos en hombre lobo. Esta transformación nos permitirá aumentar la velocidad tanto al caminar cómo al correr, así cómo aumentar la altura de nuestro salto de uno hasta tres bloques de altura. Por último, transformarnos en hombre lobo nos permitirá subir un bloque de altura sin tener que saltar.
